50 HECTARES OF VINEYARDS

"Optimus quisque" – simply the best.

Such is the principle that has guided the Order of Malta for some 900 years. Early in the first millennium, grapevines were already planted and grapes were harvested at its oldest estate, the Ordenskommende Mailberg.

Simply the best.

THE NORTHWESTERN WEINVIERTEL

Managed by Lenz Moser
since 1969.

The winery currently managed by Weinkellerei Lenz Moser spans some 50 hectares and is situated in the northwestern Weinviertel, directly on the Czech border.

Classic Austrian varieties like Grüner Veltliner and Blauer Zweigelt flourish in the fresh, continental climate, alongside francophile varieties like Chardonnay and Merlot.

Mailberg Castle is also a place where people come together. Thanks in large part to the international renown of the orders, guests come from near and far to enjoy the special ambience of the castle hotel, the adjoining restaurant and the castle wine cellar.

Ideal growing conditions
for Grüner Veltliner.

The tradition-conscious Castle Winery of the Order of Malta is much favoured by the weather thanks to the Mailberg basin.

Sheltered against the often cool west winds, it is always a touch warmer here than the surrounding regions – and the difference is in the taste. Winery manager Norbert Gutmayer has been watching every grape grow since 1998.

“Here we show what the Grüner Veltliner can really do, from sparkling wine and the renowned Ried Hundschupfen to the very ripe Grüner Veltliner.

That said, we have also come to realise that the conditions are very good for red wines, so several plots are planted with Zweigelt or even Cabernet and Merlot.”
